Top 10 Hitchcock Films6

In anticipation of the upcoming HBO movie ‘The Girl’, which details and explores the relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren, I thought it appropriate to list my top 10 favourite Hitchcock films. I know, I know, an HBO film that most people haven’t heard of (including me until I saw it on this site) isn’t really reason to break out in song and dance – but screw you, I love Hitchcock films, so I’m making a list!

A small caveat before I begin the list – I haven’t seen all the Hitchcock films ever made. I haven’t seen any of his silent films, and have only seen one from his pre-Hollywood era, “The 39 Steps”. There are also lots more that I want to see, and if I had seen them they would therefore be in the running for the top 10 list that will follow. Bottom line is the list is not complete, and will change. At this point in time however, these are ten films from one of the greatest and most influential film directors of the 20th Century.

Poster Roundup – Looper, Life Of Pi, Trouble With The Curve And More!0

Resident-Evil-Retribution-Alice-Banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Looper, Life Of Pi, Trouble With The Curve, Lawless, Killing Them Softly, Resident Evil Retribution, Butter, Arbitrage, Mental, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You, The Citizen, Damsels In Distress, Least Among Saints, Iceberg Slim Portrait Of A Pimp, Head Games, Barricade and The Rift.

Ah Looper, could you possibly look any more awesome? It’s only a mere month way until Rian Johnson’s time travelling thriller is finally unleashed upon us lucky film fans, so until then we have another duo of effective character posters to tide us over. I know, that’s barely enough to whet one’s appetite, but they’re still a pair of sleek designs worth checking out. We have a new Life Of Pi poster this week too, and thankfully it’s far more impressive than then the debut poster for the film was. Visually, the design is a glossy and vivid representation of the film that certainly impresses. The last one-sheet I want to mention is that for Killing Them Softly. It’s a rather stark design, but it’s this minimal approach that ensures it stands out from the crowd.

There’s only one bad poster that I want to criticise this week, however its awfulness is almost unparalleled. The Rift is clearly a low-budget science fiction outing, so I only wish the filmmakers the best of luck. However nothing can excuse the beyond terrible marketing poster for the film. Filmmakers take note, this is not how you draw in an audience…

Head on after the jump to view this week’s selection in full. Click on each individual thumbnail to enlarge the image or scroll down a little further to see a larger version of the entire gallery. Enjoy!

Is The Before Sunrise Sequel Currently Filming?2

1995′s Before Sunrise is one of the best films of the 1990′s, a unique and beautiful account of two lovers meeting for the first time. In 2004, Director Richard Linklater teamed up with stars Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke for Before Sunset, which was just as beautiful and a perfect companion to the first film.

The three filmmakers have been open about the fact that the third film, possibly titles Before Midnight, will come to fruition sometime in the next year. And now there are rumours that the film has already begun production, with reports that Hawke is on set in Greece.

Trailer Roundup – Lawless, End Of Watch, The Impossible And More!1

Lawless Red Band Trailer

Director John Hillcoat

Starring Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman and Guy Pearce

Adapted from Matt Bondurant‘s book The Wettest County in the World, Lawless is a gritty depression era tale that focuses on the members of a bootlegging gang whose lives are made all the more difficult when the local authorities begin demanding a cut of their profits.

Besides a few splashes of crimson and a bare breast or two, there isn’t too much included in this new red band trailer for John Hillcoat’s tale of bootlegging that we haven’t already seen. Although the more restrained editing techniques utilised here seem to give the film a truer representation of how the final cut will look. As for the film itself, I simply can’t praise it enough at this point in time. This looks to be an action film littered with tough, well-rounded characters brought to life by an outstanding script. Plus the displays of action don’t appear to be brainless exchanges of bullets à la The Expendables 2, instead the quick shot of the children stealing the tommy gun from a victim of an apparent shooting seems to imply that Lawless has a strong message to deliver regarding the terrible deeds men can do and the meaningless of life in such a hardened era. All in all, Lawless looks like an impressive piece of cinema that this viewer couldn’t be more excited about.

Anticipation Level: 4/5

The Expendables 2 – Film Review4

expendables_two_movie_posterWhen The Expendables was first announced, action movie fans around the world rejoiced. The enticing promise of a nostalgic, high-octane action movie featuring some of the most iconic figures from the genre was something of a dream come true for many, but ultimately it was a dream failed to live up to expectations. The Expendables certainly had its entertaining merits, particularly its impressive collection of grizzled tough guys, but on the whole it was a disappointing mess that didn’t quite deliver the goods. Bummer. Luckily that meek throwback manage to make a sufficient chunk of change, ensuring a sequel would see the light of day. Two years later and that eagerly anticipated follow-up has finally arrived with a new director (Simon West) and an even bigger cast. But while The Expendables 2 may make a few of the same mistakes as it did the first time around, on the whole this is a bigger, more entertaining ride that delivers the full testosterone-fuelled package that the previous film failed to provide.

The plot of The Expendables 2, what very little of it there is, sees the ever shady CIA agent Mr. Church (Bruce Willis) forcing Barry Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his psychotic band of mercenaries into taking on what should be a trouble-free retrieval mission deep in Albania. However when arms dealer Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and his own crew of mercenaries ambushes the team, he leaves one of Ross’ men for dead before making off with the blueprints to the location of five tons of plutonium left abandoned in an old Soviet Union mine. Ross and his men swear revenge, even if it means they have to chase Vilain halfway across Eastern Europe to claim it.

Box Office Round Up – 27/8/122

The-Expendables-2

Well I’m back to give another dose of stats regarding the business of show. I will admit last week’s effort was on an inspired whim and perhaps set the standard for quantity (if not quality) a little high. I will avoid repeating things as best I can and just try deliver the cold hard mills. This weekend saw a repeat of The Expendables 2 at number 1 but mostly due to the lack of new features. The total gross is low but considering the highest place new release was Premium Rush at $6.3m that’s no surprise. Perhaps August isn’t a traditionally high grossing month, I don’t know, I’m still new here.
