I get the impression we agree on the basis of Harvey in this film only I think it's a cool concept, while you feel it is forced and cheap.

I think if you start comparing any villian to batman they come up short - except the Joker of course, but the relationship there is different: the Joker being the constant antagonist in most Batman stories - but the simplicity of Twoface as a symbol of good and evil and the turn his character takes wrapped up in an origins piece still does it for me.

He is the vehicle that drives the war between bat and Joker, and to have their fight escalate to the one human in Gotham that might be able to restore law and order for good was perfect.

In the end HD isn't Jim Gordon (who is a better man than Harvey but doesn't have the charisma) and the weight falls back on Batman; the Joker survives and Gotham remains in the balance...just as a comic book should.

Two-Face was one of the most irrelevant and (pardon the pun) two-dimensional characters I have ever seen. The comment before me puts it ever so eloquently: "...how they worked in Two Face in this film-...". Two-Face was WORKED into the film, to make the film continue into the final piece. He starts as Harvey Dent, the White Knight. He is naive, innocent though he has seen the dealings of the criminal underbelly (what's up with that?!?)and means well. When one specific incident occurs, he suddenly sees that the world is not as simple as he so naively thought, and gets ludicrously angry. The last 30mins of the film was basically Two Face repeating "You killed Rachael!" in varying degrees of anger and volume.
Harvey Dent IS the "battleground for the Joker and Batman". Not in a good way whatsoever. He is a 2D character that is used as a stepping stone to shape Batman and the Jokers character.
This article ends showing how Batman can stand up to any adversary, that he is shaped due to conflict. Not Two Face who somehow falsely decides everything is up to chance rather than decision. Existentialism to Fatalism FTW!
The biggest, though not most underlying reason, why the Dark Knight failed.
In my humble opinion.
