Poster Roundup – Django Unchained, Oz The Great And Powerful, Gangster Squad And More0

gangster_squad_banner_ver11

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Django Unchained, Oz The Great And Powerful, Gangster Squad, The Last Stand, Red Dawn, The Host, Warm Bodies, 21 And Over, Identity Thief, Gambit, Finding Joy, A Dark Truth, Buffalo Girls, Beautiful Creatures, Justice Is Mind, Under The Bed,In Our Nature, Movie 43, Ritual, Look Of Love and Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones.

It’s a good week for posters, so let’s get straight into it shall we? Django Unchained, awesome looking movie, awesome poster. Enough said. I’ve already weighed in on the cluttered but attractive Oz The Great And Powerful banner elsewhere, so we’ll skip straight to the Gangster Squad character banners. These character portraits don’t offer anything especially unique or original, but the design of them is incredibly sleek. Plus the movie looks damn good, so I’ll give anything to do with it a fat thumbs up. Gotta love Schwarzenegger rattling off a huge machine-gun with Johnny Knoxville in tow on the Last Stand one-sheet, while the design for the Red Dawn poster is also incredibly striking, surprising considering how questionable the film looks. There are even more fantastic designs featured here, but I only have so much space and I still have to badmouth the duds!

The bad posters are few and far between this week, with the design for Under The Bed being the low point. It just looks cheap, like it was made in Phototshop on a college kid’s computer. Also I don’t know what Movie 43 is, but Holy s**t is that a horrible poster. Just a cluttered bunch of mess.

Poster Roundup – Red 2, Zero Dark Thirty, Life Of Pi And More1

wreckit_ralph_banner_ver18_xlg

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Red 2, Zero Dark Thirty, Life Of Pi, Les Misérables, Wreck-It Ralph, Rise Of The Guardians, A Dangerous Method, Liberal Arts, Lay The Favourite and Fat Kid Rules The World.

Lets start with the obvious highlights of the week. Life Of Pi has had a number of eye-catching posters over the past weeks, but the latest gallery featured here is a wonderfully, dreamlike sight. Each poster is a beautiful, emotive display featuring some seriously sweet visuals. Amazing stuff. The Dreamworks animated film Rise Of The Guardians looks to be a feat for the eyes, statement that the latest characters gallery for the film attests to. Those are some very cool character designs. Next we have an effective tease for Red 2, as well as a subtle Zero Dark Thirty one-sheet that gives a cleaver indication of the various subplots in the film. Overall, a pretty solid week.

There aren’t any designs featured this week that are necessarily bad, besides the terribly generic floating heads poster for Lay The Favourite that is, but I do need to know, what the heck is Fat Kid Rules The World? Hold on… ok, so after a quick bout of research (IMDB, always IMDB) it turns out the film is about a high school dropout who recruits a chubby, suicidal kid to join his band as a drummer. Sounds sweet. And that’s why I like writing up this article, I always get to learn about films I’ve never heard about.

Poster Roundup – Oz The Great And Powerful, Wolverine, A Good Day To Die Hard And More0

the_impossible_banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Oz The Great And Powerful, Wolverine, A Good Day To Die Hard, Hitchcock, Wreck-It Ralph, Stoke, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Hansel And Gretel Witch Hunters, The Impossible, Alex Cross, On The Road, Universal Soldier: Day Of Reckoning, Safe Haven, Playing For Keeps, Gambit, The Company You Keep and At Any Price.

The pick of the week has to go the wonderfully vivid new poster for Oz The Great And Powerful. It’s a gorgeous design that cleverly harks back to the original film. Plus it’s just plain beautiful to look at. The next most notable addition featured this week is the one-sheet for Wolverine. It’s a basic and stark design, the simplicity of it authentically capturing the feel of a an old Japanese brush painting. The only other truly striking poster this week is for Stoker. It’s a haunting and creepy design that seems to accurately capture the film’s cold, eerie atmosphere.

There aren’t really any truly terrible posters released from the past week, but I do have to question the design for the A Good Day To Die Hard one sheet. ‘Yippie Ki Yay Mother Russia?’ Really? I get that it’s a take on John McClane’s famous line, but it’s just so damn cheesy!

Poster Roundup – Iron Man 3, Skyfall, Django Unchained And More0

silver_linings_playbook_banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Iron Man 3, Skyfall, Django Unchained, Warm Bodies, Silver Linings Playbook, Rise Of The Guardians, Silent Night, Treachery, Little Red Wagon, High Ground, Details, Contest, The Central Park 5, The Bitter Buddha, Billy Club and Bad Kids Go To Hell.

We have a bunch of fantastic posters to look at this week, so let’s just dive straight into it. As if Iron Man 3 couldn’t look any cooler, it now has a tantalising teaser poster to go a long with the rest of its grade-A marketing material. Instantly eye-catching without giving anything major away. Next we have a new one-sheet for Skyfall which may very well be the classiest poster to ever be featured in this column. Stark, striking and oh so good to look at. The character gallery for Django Unchained may not offer anything too mind-blowing to gaze upon, but they do provide a clear look at the rogues gallery of the one of the most exciting films set to be released this year. While Life Of Pi provides another bright piece of artwork that’s easy on the eyes, if not entirely memorable.

We don’t have any posters that are necessarily bad this week, but I do want to single out the designs for Silent Night and Billy Club. Silent Night just looks flat-out insane. I mean you don’t get much crazier than Santa with a flamethrower. As for Billy Club, I have no idea what this film is, but it looks so ridiculous that I need to know more about it. Are people going to get baseballed to death?  Tell me!

Poster Roundup – The Last Stand, Carrie, Jack Reacher And More0

seven-psycopaths-bannerThis week we take a look at the latest poster designs for The Last Stand, Carrie, Jack Reacher, Pacific Rim, Gangster Squad, Les Misérables, Silent Hill: Revelation, Seven Psychopaths, The Comedy, Price Check, Starlet, Save the Date, Cirque Du Soleil Worlds Away, Thankskilling 3, Waiting For Lightning, Last Kind Words, Hello Herman, California Solo and So Undercover.

Jumping straight to the best of this week, just take a look at the amazing poster for The Last Stand. It’s the kind of wonderfully nostalgic design usually created by some immensely talented fan, so I’m genuinely surprised that it’s an official piece of marketing for the film. Awesome stuff that would look at home alongside some of the best posters from the 80′s. I’ve already covered the Carrie poster elsewhere, but it too is a beautiful and stunning display. Next up is Pacific Rim. This is another nostalgic design that is a clear riff on old propaganda posters, an instantly eye-catching pice of art.

Before we movie on to the bad I have to ask one very important question, there’s a Thankskilling 3?!? Was there even a Thankskilling 2? The idea that Thankskilling could generate two sequels is almost as absurd as the poster for the third film in the franchise. Just crazy. The only other offender this week is the poster for So Undercover. It’s a Miley Cyrus film that sees the young starlet go undercover for some inane reason, I guess. The poster is horrible, I’m sure the film will be horrible. Also after reading the tagline ‘college… the most dangerous assignment of them all’, I had to call into work sick for a week. Shudder.

Poster Roundup – Twilight, Gangster Squad, Hitchcock And More0

twilight_saga_breaking_dawn__part_two_banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, Gangster Squad, Hitchcock, Jack Reacher, John Dies At The End, Texas Chainsaw 3D, Seven Psychopaths, Sinister, The Paperboy, The Man With The Iron Fists, Les Misérables, The Barrens and Bigfoot: The Lost Coast Tapes.

It seems as though the marketing people over in Hollywood have gotten their act together in recent times. Just take a look at the high quantity of quality designs featured this week for proof. Where to start you ask? Well how about feasting your eyes on the classy one sheets for Gangster Squad, Hitchcock, Jack Reacher and even the usually boring looking Les Misérables. They’re all great! Better still is the newest poster design for John Dies At The End which is a fantastic retro throwback that suitably sets up the film’s off kilter premise. There’s also a slew of impressive designs for Seven Psychopaths too, however the highlight (or highlights) hands down is the massive gallery of eye-popping posters for RZA’s The Man With The Iron Fists. I’m not entirely sold on the film yet, but these incredible designs are really swaying my opinion.

As for the bad, well there’s very little to complain about, although The Twilight Saga: Braking Dawn Part 2 tries its hardest to stink up the joint.. What is it with this movie and pumping out terrible promotional material? The intense stare down taking place in the latest banner for it is a little hard to take seriously considering none of the characters look like they’re even making eye contact, plus some of the actors appear to have had CGI versions of their heads photoshopped onto the wrong bodies. It all just looks terribly off.

Poster Roundup – The Hobbit, Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2, The Lone Ranger And More0

Great-Expectations-banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2, The Lone Ranger, Frankenweenie, Wreck-It Ralph, Great Expectations, Rise Of The Guardians, Flight, Zero Dark Thirty, Broken City, Smiley, The Sessions, 42, The Croods, The Comedy, The Collection, Almost Human and Amber Alert.

Another week another amazing poster for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. This week’s is relatively simple, with all the Dwarves from the film cramming their ugly faces into frame. What makes it so eye-catching though is the precise lighting and the arrangement of the little bearded ones. The Lone ranger teaser poster is another highlight this week, its simple design a wonderfully enticing example of less is more. Next up is a gallery of Frankenweenie one sheets, all of which are endearing throwbacks to good old-fashioned monster movies from the 1940′s and 50′s. Incredible stuff. As usual Wreck-It Ralph brings the endearing video game goods, while Rise Of The Guardians shows off its flashy visuals. So all in all, I’d say it’s an impressive week for poster designs.

Now for the bad. This is a little predictable, but take a look at the poster for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and try not to smirk. Seriously, what is going on there? Why is everybody running? Is it a race? Is it a group jog? Are they running late for a movie? Whatever the case is, it looks ridiculous. Oh, and the catchphrase ‘The epic finale that will live for ever’, that doesn’t even make a lick of sense… The only other fail comes courtesy of The Collection. Check out this poster for The Collector, now look at The Collection’s design. Notice any similarities? Somebody has merely taken the first one sheet for The Collection, photoshopped a portion of The Collector’s poster into it and called it a day. That is an inexcusable display of laziness right there.

Poster Roundup – The Hobbit, Cloud Atlas, Argo And More0

Cloud-Atlas-banner4

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Cloud Atlas, Argo, Les Misérables, Frankenweenie, Wreck-It Ralph, Stand Up Guys, Rise Of The Guardians, Hitchcock, Trade Of Innocents, It’s In The Blood, Smiley, Loss Of Life, Identity Thief, Gambit, The American Scream, Promised Land, Doctored, Room 237 and Smurfs 2.

All of the main contenders have brought the goods this week. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has provided a distinctively Middle Earth one sheet that shows Bilbo brandishing his iconic blade, Sting. An exciting sight that will most certainly appease fans of the novel. Next we have several new Cloud Atlas banners, all of which provide beautiful glimpse at the film’s various narratives. Incredibly striking stuff. Frankenweenie also stands out with an adorably basic design. Sometimes less is more people. Although my favourite this week by far however is the one sheet for the little documentary, The American Scream. The montage of black and white horror figures is wonderfully eye-catching, even for those individuals with an aversion to the horror genre.

I’m going to be a little lazy this week. There aren’t any truly bad posters amongst this week’s bunch, so I’m going to hold off on any negative observations. I could take aim at the bland poster for The Smurfs 2, but in all fairness, it’s a basic teaser for a kids film that does its job.

Poster Roundup – Skyfall, Argo, End Of Watch And More0

skyfall_banner_poster

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Skyfall, Argo, End Of Watch, Wreck-It Ralph, Pain And Gain, V/H/S, The Loneliest Planet, Knuckleball, Ginger And Rosa, Beautiful Creatures, Small Apartments, Atlas Shrugged Part II and So Undercover.

So there are a few posters that impress this week, but if we’re going to be realistic, none of them match the sheer level of greatness that the Wreck-It Ralph character posters reach. The reason for this is simply comes down to the fact that each one of them is a montage of classic video game characters standing alongside brand new animated characters. Seeing Zangief and M. Bison featured on the posters for a major motion picture simply warms my heart. Pain And Gain is the other main highlight, with its clever protein bottle design encapsulating exactly what the film is about is a clever way.

As for the bad, well the Skyfall poster is a little lazy, but it’s not bad per say. The only ugly duckling worth acknowledging is So Undercover, an unholy ambition starring Miley Cyrus. Gross! The mere fact that the one sheet for it sees Cyrus sporting a set of handcuffs and a police badge makes me cringe. If this seriously turns out to be a film about police officer Miley Cyrus going undercover in a high school or some other such shit, then Hollywood has officially run out of creative juices…

Poster Roundup – Cloud Atlas, Trouble With The Curve, The Impossible And More0

cloud-atlas-banner

This week we take a look at the latest poster designs for Cloud Atlas, Trouble With The Curve, The Impossible, The Bay, Chasing Mavericks, Silver Linings Playbook, Sinister, Silent Hill Revelation 3D, Universal Soldier Day Of Reckoning, Hotel Transylvania, Parental Guidance, The Collection, Gambit, The Expatriate, Francine, Smashed, Nature Calls, A Late Quartet, Last Ounce Of Courage and The House I Live In.

Before you get too excited over this week’s latest crop of posters, it must be said that there’s little to celebrate. There are a couple of impressive designs that will look fantastic lining the walls of your local cinema complex, but for the most part we have some merely sufficient picks to gaze upon. Cloud Atlas, Trouble With The Curve and The Impossible are all the biggest films featured this week, however the poster art for each is anything but amazing. They’re all certainly adequate, but nothing to write home about. Instead it’s the small horror film Sinister that steals the spotlight. Each of the posters for the film are not only appropriately creepy, but they also give the audience an ambiguous clue as to the terrors the film holds in store. I also need to highlight the brilliance of the design for The Collection. This is another small horror film that has been given a major boost of credibility thanks to an incredibly disturbing one sheet. I don’t know what that image is supposed to be, but I do know that much like some of last week’s picks, it’ll never get past the censors…

Just as there are few posters worth jumping for joy over this week, nor are there any that will leave you weeping in disgust. Although if I had to choose a single loser, I would single out the Billy Crystal and Bette Midler ‘comedy’, Parental Guidance. Much like the trailer for the film, it’s poster is as lazy and unimaginative as they come. Also Billy Crystal’s hands look really, really weird. Kind of like talons used to grasp at unsupervised children… Another poster in need of a slight tweak is that for Silent Hill Revelation. I’ve stated a few times that I’m actually looking forward to the film, however its marketing campaign has been anything but inspiring. This latest one sheet isn’t actually too bad, however it’s far too cartoonish to be scary.
